Activists To Celebrate America Recycles Day This Weekend
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Time to start cleaning out your basement of difficult-to-dispose-of junk.
WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports Saturday is America Recycles Day.
Merleanne Rampale, spokeswoman for the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO), said there will be recycling events and drop-off points throughout the northern suburbs.
"Electronics are a big one. Propane tanks and smoke detectors, we get a number of those in. We've taken car and automotive batteries. We take eyeglasses and we actually get hundreds of pairs (that) we process through our good friends in the Lions Clubs. And those are recycled and given to people in need," she said.
Rampale said their services have been especially in demand since nearly three years ago, when Illinois enacted a statewide landfill ban for many electronic devices.
SWALCO was hosting Recycle-O-Rama, a recycling and paper shredding event, at Westfield Hawthorn Mall on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon. For a full list of materials you can recycle at Recycle-O-Rama, click here.
