Activists Offering $1K Reward For Tips On Suspect Who Shot, Robbed Man Watering Lawn
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The attack of a senior citizen while he was watering his neighbor's lawn was captured on video.
CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports on news of a reward to catch the suspect.
Community Activist Andrew Holmes says a $1,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.
Wednesday, he and others were focused on getting the word out.
Block by block they went door to door handing out flyers.
Holmes and other activists hope to catch the person who shot 71-year-old Fred LaGuardia as he was watering the lawn on his block Tuesday afternoon.
"They got to turn themselves in one way or the other," Holmes said.
The shooting stikes a personal chord with Holmes, who fought back tears of frustration.
"You get tired day in and day out babies shot, seniors robbed and they think it's a joke."
Every moment of the chilling encounter, shooting and robbery, was captured on video by a surveillance camera. The two people rode by as LaGuardia waters the grass.
They returned, and police say one demanded the 71-year-old's wallet. When he refused, he was shot in the stomach and his wallet taken from his pocket.
Holmes and the other activists believe someone in the neighborhood knows who pulled the trigger, so they're asking everyone to help.
"These kids were on bikes so they didn't come from far," Dr. Donovan Price says.
"Take a close look at the video," Holmes pleads. "If you know that's your son, your nephew, your uncle, no matter who he was, turn these two individuals in."
The victim is still in the hospital in stable condition, however, according to Holmes. But given his age, there are concerns that might change.
Activists ask anyone with information about the crime to call (800) U-TELLUS, or (800) 883-5587 where you can report it anonymously.
