A cooldown begins in Chicago

Cooler weather rolling in for the rest of the week in Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — Following a few sprinkles Tuesday afternoon, we are tracking cooler weather Wednesday then widespread rain Thursday night.

A cold front blows through our area Wednesday morning, capping afternoon high temperatures in the lower 60s with gusty northwest winds. Wednesday night will bring low temperatures in the 30s areawide and potentially a light freeze in far west suburbs.

A disturbance approaching from the Pacific Northwest is set to bring widespread rain and even a few thunderstorms late Thursday night into Friday morning. We expect a widespread 0.3" to 0.5" of rainfall -- our most beneficial rain in weeks.

While periods of seasonably cool weather return this week, we are still waiting on the first freeze of the season at O'Hare. As the climate warms, Chicago's first freeze is now coming on average two weeks later than it used to.
