84 Lumber Offering DIY 'Mini Homes'--Starting At $7,000

CHICAGO (CBS) -- For just under $7,000 you can build your own home.

Yes, you. By yourself.

That's the concept behind the "Tiny Living" line from 84 Lumber, the first major retailer to offer the trendy micro homes for sale.

84 Lumber will offer four tiny home models under three packages for people who want to build their own houses or those who want a move-in ready home.

The models range from 150 to 200 square feet. An average sized residential home is more than 10 times that size.

Tiny home living is an emerging trend, but has been typically offered by smaller, custom builders.

"The tiny home movement lies perfectly at the intersection of 84 Lumber's expertise in high-quality building materials and green building best practices," said company president Maggie Hardy Magerko.

The DIY model starts at just under $7,000, and comes with a sub-floor, materials list and blueprints. Models for about $20,000 come partially built, but require the owner to add exterior and interior finishing touches. The homes come with a tank-less water heater and composting toilet.

More expensive move-in-ready homes--built by a contractor--will sell for about $50,000.

Tiny Living's first model home, the Roving, is available for purchase through www.84tinyliving.com.

The models are built to move, literally on a trailer.

84 Lumber has locations in Naperville and Gurnee.
