3 children among 7 injured when stolen SUV causes crash in downtown Chicago; teen driver in custody
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three children were among seven people injured when a stolen Jeep Cherokee caused a four-car crash Wednesday night in the Streeterville neighborhood.
Police said, shortly after 9 p.m., a 2015 Jeep Cherokee headed south on Michigan Avenue when it ran a red light at Chicago Avenue and crashed into a Dodge van in the intersection. The Cherokee also hit a Jeep Compass facing north on Michigan Avenue and a Honda SUV.
A 16-year-old boy who was driving the Cherokee ran off but was arrested by responding police, and was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition. A female passenger in the Cherokee also was taken into custody, and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition.
A woman in the Dodge van was taken to Northwestern in fair condition, and a 6-year-old girl in the van was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital in fair condition.
A woman in the Compass was taken to Northwestern in good condition, and two children – a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old – in the Compass were taken to Lurie in fair condition.
No one in the Honda was injured.
Police said the Cherokee had been reported stolen, and charges were pending against the driver and passenger.
