4-year-old boy found unresponsive in pool at suburban Chicago hotel

Guests rescue boy from pool at suburban Chicago hotel

GLENVIEW, Ill. (CBS) – A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized after being found unresponsive in a pool at a hotel in Glenview Friday night.

In an instant, hotel guests became first responders, springing into action to save the boy. Guests describe the incident as horrible.

"Everyone was just running and panicking," said Brayden Brubaker.

Around 9:30 p.m., Brayden and Jeff Brubaker were at the pool inside the Renaissance Hotel at 1400 Milwaukee Avenue when suddenly everyone was frantic.

"We were racing back and forth. I saw the kid chilling on the edge of the pool near the deep end area, and next thing we knew, the daughter was pulling him out," Brayden said.

"I was at the other end, and she came running over and just - she pulled the kid out of the water," Jeff said.

The boy was pulled from the pool unresponsive--unconscious and not breathing.

Jeff said he gave the boy CPR.

"I was doing compressions, you know breaths, and he started foaming, and I could hear a bunch of water in his lungs," Jeff said.

The Brubakers say Glenview Police showed up next. An officer took over doing chest compressions on the 4-year-old.

Fire crews took the child to Lutheran General Hospital, where he remained in serious condition as of Saturday.

The Brubakers say they think the boy's mother was at the pool at the time.

The hotel pool appeared to be open Saturday.

Glenview Police are investigating the incident.
