39th Annual Chicago Marathon By The Numbers
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The 39th annual Chicago Marathon is a week away and thousands of runners aren't the only ones getting ready for the big race. The huge event that usually takes over downtown Chicago takes thousands of organizers, runners and volunteers to pull off.
WBBM's Nancy Harty talked with Marathon Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski about the 39th Annual Chicago Marathon, set to take place on Oct. 9.
Here's the race by the numbers.
26.2 Miles: The length of the marathon
29: Number of neighborhoods runners will race winds through. By the way, flyers are out reminding you to clear your cars ahead of time if you're in one of the neighborhoods
12,000: Number of volunteers helping out on the day of the race
1 Million: Amount of fans cheering on our runners
40,000: Runners competing in the Chicago Marathon
130: Number of countries runners will come from, including the U.S.
50: All 50 states will be represented
In order to keep runners safe, organizers are requiring them to show a photo ID when they pick up their packets. Volunteers and spectators will go through screening and the finish line will be open to only those with tickets.
As for the weather, Pinkowski says the long-term forecasts bode well for race day but they'll continue to monitor the weather and adjust plans. During the final days of the marathon, Pinkowski says runners should be resting and hydrating.
"The training is done, you've done your long runs, just some jogging and stretching," he says.
