3-Year-Old Boy Shot And Killed In Waukegan

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 3-year-old boy was shot and killed early Thursday in north suburban Waukegan, and police said it appeared to be an accident.

Police and fire authorities responded to a report of a child shot shortly before 3 a.m. at a home in the 1100 block of Greenfield Avenue.

Police and fire officials said a 3-year-old boy was found with a gunshot wound to the head. The boy was taken to Vista West Medical Center in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead.

Based on preliminary information, police said the shooting appeared to be an accident.

It was not immediately clear if the shooting was self-inflicted, why the boy was up at nearly 3 a.m., or if anyone else in the home was awake at the time.

"We have a child that has been shot, and we want to know where the gun came from, where the gun was at, who else was in the home, who pulled the trigger of this firearm. These are things that we are all looking into right now. Investigators are piecing this together," Waukegan Police Cmdr. Joe Florip said.

The boy's family was cooperating with police. Detectives were questioning them at the Waukegan police station.
