Chicago shooting: 3 people shot outside Pullman Walmart
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three people were shot outside of a Walmart in the Pullman neighborhood on Wednesday night.
The victims were loading their vehicle with groceries purchased at the store in the 10900 block of South Doty Avenue off the Bishop Ford Freeway around 7:20 p.m., when a dark-colored sedan drove by and occupants from the car fired shots, according to Chicago Police.
The victims included a 27-year-old man who was shot in the left leg and transported to an unknown hospital in good condition.
A 25-year-old man was shot in the chest and back and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition.
A 19-year-old woman was shot in the right forearm and was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in good condition.
Witnesses said the shots sent other shoppers rushing into the Walmart for safety.
"I saw people running in. They thought it was fireworks, but it was shots," said Arnez White, who works at the Walmart. I came outside to see what was going on, and I see two people laying on the floor."
White said he heard 10 to 13 shots.
"You know, you have senior citizens that come here quite often, you know, and you think about those people, and the people that's been coming here for years – and so for me, it's just really, it's heartbreaking," a woman in the parking lot added.
As CBS 2's Jermont Terry reported, a car remained at the scene as of 10 p.m. with the trunk up and the door open. It was a car where some of the victims were loading their groceries.
Two carts full of shopping bags also remained at the scene.
Meanwhile, cones were set up as evidence markers where shell casings were left behind.
Other cars were parked near the vehicle with the open truck. It was not known whether all the victims were in the same car or not, but we do know some customers were unable to get their vehicles Wednesday night because they are now part of a crime scene.
It is not clear if the shooting was a targeted crime or a robbery that went wrong. That is part of the investigation.
