3 People Rushed To Hospital From Englewood House Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three people were rushed to the hospital Monday evening from the scene of a fire in Englewood, after they found themselves trapped.

The fire broke out in the house at 5818 S. Peoria St., the Fire Department said. The blaze was on the first floor of the one-and-a-half-story house, and huge flames were seen coming out.

As CBS 2's Jermont Terry reported, people were heard screaming for help inside. Firefighters said one man and two women were stuck inside the duplex house during the fire.

The fire blocked all the exits to the house, so the CFD said getting out was truly problematic for the people inside. One jumped from a first-floor window, while firefighters rescued the other too.

"Because of the gates on the windows – there was yelling at the gate," said witness Chris Brown. "I was the first on the scene. I seen them at the gate being heard. They were trying to get out, but they couldn't get out because of the gates; because of the bars."

A 70-year-old woman was in critical condition, a 66-year-old man was also critical condition, and a 41-year-old woman was in good when paramedics rushed them from the scene, the Fire Department said. The younger woman was the one who jumped from the window.

All were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

The fire was out by 9:20 p.m., but firefighters remained at the scene dealing with hot spots after 10 p.m.. The house was destroyed by the fire.
