3 people displaced after apartment fire on Chicago's Northwest Side

Three people displaced by apartment fire in Portage Park

CHICAGO (CBS)-- Three people were displaced in an apartment building fire in Portage Park overnight.

Smoke was seen pouring from the windows of the building in the 5000 block of West Grace Street, near LeClaire Avenue, just after 2:15 a.m.

The Chicago Fire Department said the fire was on the third floor of the three-story building.

One man who lives across the hall from the site of the fire said he woke up to the sound of fire alarms, and went to check on his neighbors.

"I looked out my front peephole of my door and I saw the hallway was full of smoke. Then I grabbed my fire extinguisher and went out back to see if anyone - the two people who live in the apartment - were out and about," the neighbor said. "I went out the back. Their back door was open, but the smoke coming out was too thick for me to get in."

Three people were displaced from their homes as a result of the fire.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
