Drive-by shooting near University of Chicago Medical Center leaves 3 hurt

CHICAGO (CBS) — Three men are hurt after a drive-by shooting just steps away from the University of Chicago Medical Center in Hyde Park Sunday morning. One of the victims is a University of Chicago security guard, a police source tells CBS 2.

Chicago Police said that around 5:19 a.m., the men, 29, 31, and 51, were in the 700 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when an SUV approached and someone inside began firing shots.

The 51-year-old suffered a graze wound to the nose. The 29-year-old was struck in his right thigh and grazed in the right calf. The 31-year-old was shot in his lower right leg.

All three were listed at the University of Chicago Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized.

According to an alert from UChicago Medicine, the victims were found on the sidewalk suffering from gunshot wounds.

Witnesses saw someone in a dark gray SUV fire shots in the direction of several people standing near a parked car, and it appeared to be a targeted shooting.

The SUV was last seen heading southbound on Cottage Grove Avenue, away from the medical center area.

Traffic was temporarily rerouted for the investigation.

No other injuries were reported, and no one is in custody.
