3 Dead, 32 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Three men were killed — including a man who died shielding his mother from gunfire — and at least 32 others were wounded in weekend shootings as summer started in Chicago.

James Jones, 21, tried to protect his 46-year-old mother Alicia Jones on the front porch of their South Chicago neighborhood home when a gunman opened fire from a gangway about noon Saturday in the 8400 block of South Colfax, according to their family and authorities.

The man was dead at the scene, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. His mother was in critical condition and undergoing surgery at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn Saturday night.

The most recent fatal shooting happened Sunday morning in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

Officers responding to a call of an unresponsive person about 10:30 a.m. found the 27-year-old man inside a vehicle in the 100 block of North Parkside, police said.

The man had been shot in the back and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The medical examiner's office confirmed the fatality but did not release additional details.

Saturday night, a man was gunned down in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side, police said.

The 18-year-old was walking in the 4200 block of West Division at 11:18 p.m. when a gunman walked up and fired shots, police said. The gunman ran away after the shooting.

He was shot once in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened early Monday in the Little Village neighborhood.

A 37-year-old man was shot in his leg in the 5200 block of West Quincy at 12:21 a.m., police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

At least 30 other people have been wounded in shootings since 5:40 p.m. Friday.

Additionally, a man was shot by a Chicago Police officer early Saturday in the South Shore neighborhood.

About 12:10 a.m., the Area Central gun unit received a call of men with guns near East 71st Street and South Merrill Avenue, police said. A 23-year-old man allegedly pointed a gun at an officer who then shot him several times during a pursuit, police said.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital but his exact condition wasn't known Saturday afternoon, according to a police review authority spokesman. Police said a weapon was recovered at the scene and no officers were hurt.
