2 thieves break into business, steal ATM on Chicago's West Side, witness say
CHICAGO (CBS) – Two thieves broke into a currency exchange and stole an ATM in the West Town neighborhood Friday morning.
It happened just after 2:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of West Division Street.
According to Chicago police, officers responded to a burglary and found broken glass from the front door of the business.
A witness told police the unknown offenders broke the glass and removed the ATM machine before carrying it to a white van and then fled the scene.
This is the latest in a growing trend of ATM thefts.
In January, another currency exchange was burglarized for its ATM when thieves drove a Jeep Cherokee into the front window near Roosevelt and Jefferson Street.
Last month, another currency exchange was targeted on the city's near West Side. The burglars broke the front glass door of that business before entering and taking the machine containing an unknown amount of money.
The owner said it happened five times before.
It's unclear if the burglaries are connected.
As for the West Town ATM burglary, police say no one is in custody.
Area 3 detectives were investigating.
