2 Dead, 4 Wounded In Tuesday Shootings On South, West Sides

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two men were killed and at least four others were wounded in shootings Tuesday on the city's South and West sides.

Most recently, a man was shot to death in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side. About 10:35 p.m., the 43-year-old was driving in the 7700 block of South Calumet when another male fired shots from the sidewalk, according to Chicago Police. The man was shot in the back and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

Tuesday morning, a man was found shot to death in the South Side Washington Heights neighborhood. Said E. Hayik, 25, was seen at 7:35 a.m. lying in a gangway with a gunshot wound to the back of the head at 92nd and Bishop, according to police and the medical examiner's office. Police said it appeared he had been there for some time. He lived in the 5200 block of West 23rd Street in Cicero.

The latest nonfatal shooting happened about 10:30 p.m. in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. A 56-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk in the 3900 block of West Wilcox when he heard shots and realized he'd been shot in both legs, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

At 8:52 p.m., a 25-year-old man was shot during a robbery in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. He was walking in the 3300 block of West Congress when another male walked up and announced a robbery, police said. The man tried to grab the gun from the robber, but it discharged and he was shot in the right leg. The man then took himself to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, a 23-year-old man was shot in the West Side Austin neighborhood. He was standing in the 5200 block of West Ferdinand about 2 p.m. when he heard shots and realized he'd suffered a gunshot wound to the hip, police said. He was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park and was later transferred to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

In the day's first shooting, a 31-year-old man was shot and seriously wounded in the South Shore neighborhood. He was found about 3:55 a.m. lying in the street in the 7700 block of South Exchange, police said. He had suffered one gunshot wound to the lower back and another to the lower right side and was taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Police said additional information was not immediately available as the man has stopped cooperating with investigators.
