19-Year-Old DePaul Student Robbed At Gunpoint
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A DePaul University student was robbed at gunpoint on campus Thursday night, and police are searching for three suspects, and putting students and staff on alert.
A 19-year-old man was walking near Belden and Fremont in front of Cortelyou Commons around 11:45 p.m. Thursday, when three men approached him, and demanded his personal belongings. One of them pulled out a gun, and the three suspects ran away after stealing an undetermined amount of cash.
The victim was not injured.
After Thursday night's holdup, the university issued a public safety alert, and posted the message on campus dorms.
It's just the latest in a recent string of robberies in the area. The university has issued three alerts or similar robberies in recent weeks, including two daylight attacks. Thursday night's robbery was the first in which a gun was shown.
Some students said they are being extra careful after Thursday's robbery.
"Try not to be out late at night by yourself, or if you are just hurry back as fast as possible," Matt Gagen said.
Freshman Hailey Schons said she often sees DePaul Public Safety patrolling the area.
"I don't think it necessarily eases anything, because things still happen," she said. "Always pretty scary to see how close it is to the campus, and how scary it is out there."
A university spokesperson said they have been on heightened alert, and have public safety officers patrolling campus 24/7.
Anyone with information about the robberies is urged to call DePaul Public Safety or Chicago Police.
