14-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shot In Riverdale

(CBS) -- A 14-year-old boy was fatally shot Sunday evening in south suburban Riverdale.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 7:25 p.m. in the 14300 block of South Dearborn Street found 14-year-old Rashad Oliver lying in the street with a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said.

Oliver, of the 0-100 block of East 144th Street in Riverdale, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 9:39 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiners' office.

He was a student at Lincoln Junior High School in Dolton. The district made extra staff available for students at the school.

"Our big thing is making sure the children are safe," Riverdale District 148 Supt. Jayne Purcell told CBS 2's Dana Kozlov Monday.

The Riverdale police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are investigating. Police say they don't believe Oliver was in a gang. The teen was in the foster care system.

Investigators are reviewing security tape from near the scene for potential leads.

Anyone with information should call police at (708) 841-2203, ext. 2.
