12-year-old passenger killed in rollover crash on I-55 at Harlem Avenue

FOREST VIEW, Ill. (CBS) – A 12-year-old is dead following a rollover crash on the Stevenson Expressway Sunday morning, according to Illinois State Police.

Troopers responded to the single-vehicle crash around 3:15 a.m. on northbound I-55 at Harlem Avenue.

Illinois State Police said the 39-year-old man was traveling northeast on the Stevenson and tried to change lanes, but lost control due to wet pavement. The car went off the roadway to the right, hit a guardrail, and flipped over.

The 12-year-old passenger, a girl, was ejected from the vehicle, ISP said. She was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead.

Illinois State Police said five others were injured – three of them children. The accident victims – a 39-year-old man, a 32-year-old woman, a 4-year-old girl, a 6-year-old girl, and a 13-year-old girl – were all taken to area hospitals.

All northbound lanes were closed for the crash investigation. Traffic was rerouted at Harlem Avenue.
