Shooting at suburban Chicago hotel leaves 1 dead; person of interest in custody
OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. (CBS) -- One person is dead following a shooting inside a hotel in the western suburbs Saturday night
Around 8:30 p.m., Oakbrook Terrace police and officers from surrounding districts responded to the Hilton Suites, located at 10 Drury Lane, for a report of shots fired.
Arriving officers located a man with apparent gunshot wounds. They performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived on the scene.
The victim, identified as 33-year-old Calvin Truitt by the Medical Examiner's Office, was then taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Following an extensive search of the hotel, one person of interest was taken into custody.
The hotel was open at the time, with many guests placed on lockdown due to the shooting. Stephani Swieca was returning from a wedding when she was met by a sea of police lights, and couldn't get inside the hotel.
"So then I called the hotel – I think it was right around 10:35 – and they said, 'Yes, there was an incident. We were in lockdown in the back room, but we are open. So as long as the police will let you through, you can come in and get your stuff,'" she said.
Unfortunately, she could not gather belongings on Saturday night. Instead, she had to return Sunday morning to get her car and her suitcase, after staying at a friend's home overnight.
"We decided to drive back to go get my car and get my stuff from the room as well. We got back there probably around 8:30. Our room was on the 6th floor," she said.
When she returned, she said she noticed a sheet covering the hallway of the 7th floor where police say the shooting happened.
"My heart goes out to the family of the victim. You know, it's always rough when things like this happen. Of course, the staff as well were very nice and kind, considering they must've been pretty terrified too," Swieca said.
She said, when checking-out Sunday morning, she asked the front desk about a potential refund.
"They're like, 'We'll take your name down on the list, and the general manager will call you later this week, with more details about that,'" she said.
The shooting was said to be an isolated incident with no ongoing danger to the community.
The incident is being investigated by the Oakbrook Terrace Police Department, the DuPage County Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team (MERIT), the DuPage County Coroner's Office, and the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.
As of Sunday, no criminal charges were filed.
Oakbrook Terrace police say they will continue to provide updates as it becomes available.
