1 Killed, 5 Wounded In Thursday Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 16-year-old boy was killed and at least five others were wounded in shootings Thursday on the South and West sides.

The teenage boy was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in the South Shore neighborhood.

About 6 p.m., Amari Sutton was found outside in the 1400 block of East 73rd Street — the same block he lived in — with gunshot wounds to the chest and neck, police and the Cook County medical examiner's office said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, the medical examiner's office said. A police source said the boy was a documented gang member.

In the most recent nonfatal shooting, a 26-year-old man was hurt in a drive-by shooting in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

About 10:55 p.m., the man was standing with others in the 5700 block of West Ohio when shots were fired out of a passing light-colored SUV, police said. The man was shot in the abdomen.

A friend took him to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, and he was later transferred to Stroger Hospital, police said. His condition had stabilized.

Earlier in the night, another man was shot and seriously wounded in Austin.

The 20-year-old was shot multiple times in the abdomen about 6:20 p.m. in the 1200 block of North Parkside, police said. He took himself to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he was listed in serious condition.

About 1:40 p.m., another 20-year-old man was shot in the South Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

He was in the 8000 block of South Marshfield when someone got out of a vehicle and fired shots, police said. The shooter then got back in the vehicle and drove away. The 20-year-old was shot multiple times in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

Less than two hours earlier, a man was shot in the leg on the Far South Side.

The 18-year-old was shot in the left leg and was listed in good condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn as of noon, police said. He said he was shot in the 10300 block of South Prairie, but police have not yet found a crime scene, and said the man is not cooperating with investigators.

A police source said he is an admitted gang member.

About 11:30 a.m., a city Water Department employee was injured in a Little Village neighborhood shooting on the Southwest Side.

The 40-year-old was in the 3000 block of South Komensky when two males walked up and fired shots in his direction, police said. He was shot in the upper left chest and hand, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition stabilized.

The man is an employee of city's Water Department, spokesman Peter Scales confirmed. Scales declined to provide additional details.
