1 Dead, 5 Wounded In Two Shootings In Chatham, Greater Grand Crossing

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman was killed, and five other people were wounded, in two separate shootings that happened just minutes apart, and only blocks away from each other Tuesday night in the Chatham and Greater Grand Crossing neighborhoods.

The first shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. in the 7500 block of South Stewart Avenue. Police said three women were fighting on the street, when an unknown man shot them, and then fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV.

Lucille T. Barnes, 34, died after she was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. A 22-year-old woman shot in the leg and wrist, and a 25-year-old woman shot in the arm also went to Stroger. A 22-year-old woman and a 25-year-old woman also were taken to Stroger Hospital, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Less than ten minutes later, A 41-year-old woman, a 16-year-old boy, and a 14-year-old girl were wounded when someone fired shots from a passing vehicle in the 8000 block of South Stewart Avenue, about half a mile south.

None of their injuries was considered life-threatening.

Police said the two shootings do not appear to be connected.

No one was in custody for either shooting early Wednesday morning.
