1 Dead, 14 Wounded In Monday Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man was killed and at least 14 other people were wounded in shootings across the city throughout Monday.

The man was killed and a teenager was critically wounded Monday morning in a Back of the Yards neighborhood shooting on the South Side.

The shooting happened at 8:57 a.m. in the 5400 block of South Winchester Avenue, police said.

Joseph Lewis, 23, of the 3500 block of West 60th Place, was shot and taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:17 a.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

A 17-year-old boy wounded in the shooting was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

The most recent non-fatal shooting left four people wounded in the South Shore neighborhood Monday night.

A man, two women and a teenage girl were all shot about 10:40 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Stony Island Avenue, police said.

A 26-year-old man was shot in the leg, an 18-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen, a 22-year-old woman was shot in the neck and a 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg, police said. Their hospital information was not available, but police said all their conditions had stabilized. Police said all of their injuries were not life-threatening.

Less than 90 minutes earlier, a woman was grazed by a bullet in the West Englewood neighborhood.

The 45-year-old suffered a graze wound to the top of her head about 9:18 p.m. in the 5600 block of South Elizabeth Street, police said. She was taken to Christ Medical Center in fair condition.

About 5:45 p.m., a bullet grazed a man's head on the Far South Side.

The 20-year-old was walking in the 200 block of West 104th Place when he heard gunshots, police said. He was taken to Christ Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

Earlier Monday, a teenage boy was shot and seriously injured in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.

The 17-year-old was in the 5400 block of South Halsted Street when he was shot in the back about 11:15 a.m., police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

About 8:50 a.m., a man was shot in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

The 31-year-old drove himself to Norwegian American Hospital about 8:50 a.m. with a gunshot wound to the arm, police said. He told officers he was driving in the 1600 block of North St. Louis Avenue when another car pulled up alongside and someone in the other vehicle asked about his gang affiliation before opening fire. The man, a documented gang member, was listed in good condition, police said.

A man was hurt in a drive-by shooting early Monday in the Woodlawn neighborhood.

The 24-year-old was standing on the corner in the 6500 block of South Drexel Avenue at 2:20 a.m. when shots were fired from a passing vehicle, police said. The man was struck in the hand and taken to University of Chicago Hospital, where his condition had stabilized.

At 12:44 a.m., two men were shot in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side.

The two were in a vehicle in the 6600 block of South State Street when they were shot, police said. A 21-year-old was shot in the groin and was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital, where his condition had stabilized. A 22-year-old was shot in the leg and also taken to Saint Bernard, where he was in good condition, police said.

At the same time on the Far South Side, two people were shot in the West Pullman neighborhood.

A man and woman were in the 10200 block of South Perry Avenue at 12:44 a.m. when they were shot, police said. The 18-year-old woman was shot in the chest, and the 31-year-old man was shot in the shoulder. Both were taken to Christ Hospital, where their conditions had stabilized, police said.
