First Case Of Zika Virus Reported In New Hampshire

CONCORD, N.H. (CBS/AP) — Health officials in New Hampshire have reported the first case of the Zika virus in the state, an adult female who had sexual contact with a male partner who traveled to a country dealing with an outbreak of the mosquito-borne virus and was symptomatic.

Dr. Ben Chan, state epidemiologist, said Tuesday that the woman wasn't pregnant. She was not hospitalized and she has recovered from the illness. No other details, including the country where her partner traveled, were provided by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services.

The virus has already been reported in Massachusetts and Maine.

Zika is rapidly spreading through Latin America, and scientists are studying the virus' possible connection to babies born with unusually small heads. The birth defect is called microcephaly.
