5-Year-Old Girl And Mother In Worcester Hit By Car, Seriously Hurt While Crossing Road
WORCESTER (CBS) – A 5-year-old girl and her mother were seriously hurt Monday morning when they were hit by a car in Worcester.
It happened around 9:30 a.m. on Stafford Street.
Worcester Police say the 5-year-old girl was hit and the impact threw her down the street. The 44-year-old mother got pinned under a parked car.
Ester Mensha is anguished after witnessing the tragic incident. The mother and daughter were visiting her beauty supply shop as they often do. "I came out here and saw that the baby was down the road, and the lady was under the car," Mensha said.
Those nearby who heard the crash, ran out, lifted the car off of her and pulled her out from under it.
The girl was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition. The mother suffered broken bones and was hospitalized in serious condition.
Police say the driver stayed on scene until police arrived. As of now, they say neither speed nor alcohol seem to be a factor.
"As of right now it looks like speed was not a factor, but we won't know for sure until they do the full work up," said Worcester Police Lt. Sean Murtha.
Police were seen removing hard drives with video of the incident.
It is not yet clear if the pair was using the crosswalk when they were hit.
People WBZ spoke with say things like this have happened before, and they're calling for changes. "It seems like it's a game of Frogger," said Alex Valle of Worcester. "So, it's kind of like trying to get across as quickly as possible."
The driver is not currently facing charges.
