Family Escapes House Fire In Worcester
WORCESTER (CBS) – A family escaped a home that erupted in flames on Westminster Street in Worcester Monday afternoon.
"I don't really know how to put it in words," said resident Jenna Prokopowich. "I'm very much in shock."
Two adults and two teens inside the home escaped, grabbing their family dog.
Their grandfather stood outside for hours, watching as firefighters poured water through the center of the house he built.
"They've raised all of us," said resident Jayce Bober. "This house is an open house for anybody who needed help."
The grandfather has lived there 40 years, taking in his grandchildren and their friends, even after losing his wife recently.
"He's so proud. He's a proud man," Bober said. "He would never ask anybody for help. But he's the first person to help somebody who needs help."
Firefighters tried to fight the flames quickly, but say it was too dangerous for them to stay inside.
Family members feel lucky to be alive but worry they've lost all the memories the house holds.
Firefighters say it will be hard to determine the cause of the fire because so much of the home is destroyed.
