Car crashes into Worcester condo; homeowner escapes injury

Car crashes into Worcester condo, driver seriously hurt

WORCESTER - A car flipped into a Worcester condo on Tuesday in a crash that sent the driver to the hospital. The car ended up in the living room of the home.

Diana Mwangi was in her kitchen making lunch. "All I heard was an explosion," Mwangi said.

That explosion was a Kia sedan smashing through the wall of her condo upside down. She was on the phone with her mom in Kenya.

"I told her mom, 'I'm dying,'" Mwangi said.

Truth is, she dove to the floor and doesn't have a scratch, but she can't get the driver out of her mind.

"He was moaning and he was trying to move, and I was telling him please don't move," Mwangi said.

It was just minutes after noon when the car somehow veered off Halcyon Drive, went uphill through the trees and smashed into her unit, shattering her sliding patio door, and turning the upstairs deck into kindling.

"I'm like where did this car come from, because the trees did not stop it," Mwangi said.

The 24-year-old man driving the car was trapped and rescuers had to pry him from the wreckage. Police say he was seriously hurt.

"I did not want to see them removing him. I walked away," Mwangi said. "I hope he is OK."

The crash made a mess of Mwangi's condo and authorities evacuated several units as they made sure the building was structurally safe.

Now she is left to wonder what could have happened if her three young boys had been home from school, watching TV right where the car made its entrance.

"I'm so lucky, I'm so blessed to be alive," Mwangi said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
