Driver Who Hit Toddler: 'Wouldn't Wish This On My Worst Enemy'
HAVERHILL (CBS) -- A young boy is in critical condition after he and a woman were hit by a car in Haverhill on Monday night.
Haverhill Police and Fire were called to the scene on River Street around 6:20 p.m.
Preliminary investigations show that a man, a woman, and a toddler were crossing the street when a car struck the woman and the boy.
According to police, the woman broke her arm and the toddler was transported to Lawrence General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A few hours later, police said the boy was med-flighted to Boston Medical Center.
The driver stayed on the scene and tried to help.
He told WBZ-TV that he swerved to avoid hitting the man and woman crossing the street but never saw the young boy walking a few feet behind them.
"All of my prayers right now are with that little boy. I have a son his age and I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy," he said.
"It was an accident," he added.
Witnesses ran into a nearby pizza shop and told workers to call 911.
"I was just like, freaked out. I didn't know what was going on," recalled one worker.
A witness said, "It's sad to see a little kid get hit and you don't know if they are going to be okay or what's going to happen."
Accident reconstruction crews blocked off the area for three hours to investigate.
Police have not released any more information at this time. No word yet on any possible charges.
