Woman Jumps Out Window, Five Displaced After Concord NH Fire
CONCORD, N.H. (CBS) -- A woman jumped from a Concord home during an early morning fire, fire officials say.
Flames broke out in a multi-family home at the corner of South State and Downing Streets while five people were inside. One of the people inside jumped from a second story window, fire officials say, landing on a small roof one story below before rolling to the ground. A neighbor said the woman appeared injured, but she is expected to be OK.
"She was alert, she was conscious, she was hurt, I could tell that," resident Warren Haslan said.
Fire Chief Dan Andrud said the fire was mostly contained to the kitchen where it started, but flames were licking out the windows when emergency crews arrived.
"We had heavy fire pushing out of the second floor windows, so there was actual fire," Andrud said.
The five people inside the home when the fire broke out escaped safely. Two cats, however, died in the fire.
Haslan said he evacuated his apartment when he heard a neighbor knocking on the door.
"I heard a knock on the door, which was my next door neighbor," Haslan said. "She was knocking on it as she ran down the stairs."
Haslan said he will stay in a hotel until further notice. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents in finding shelter.
Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire.
