Ambulance Responding To Crash Struck By Alleged Drunk Driver Fleeing Scene
WEYMOUTH (CBS) - A Weymouth woman is being held on $7500 bail charged with a host of charges including drunk driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and then striking the ambulance responding to the accident call.
"I heard the smash it must have just happened because I saw the ambulance still jerking up and down," said witness Emma Cazeault who saw the crash outside her window on Bridge Street in Weymouth.
Carolyn Davis, 41, was arraigned bedside at South Shore Hospital. Cazeault said she saw Davis emerge from her red Subaru with her hands up. "She stumbled to the curb and sat down," Cazeault said. "Then paramedics got out of the ambulance they must have been impacted by the air bags because they were wiping their faces."
Prosecutors say she was involved in a hit and run accident just moments before about a half mile away, injuring another driver before allegedly fleeing the scene. "Her vehicle crossed the double median and hit the left side of the car causing it to come to an abrupt stop. It was pushed five feet toward the side of the roadway," said prosecutor Christine Billingsly.
She says Davis told paramedics she had five or six rum and cokes and nothing to eat that day. "As officers were speaking to Miss Davis they noticed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from her breath," said Billingsly.
South Shore Hospital issued a statement, "As first responders our EMS personnel put themselves at risk each day. We are very grateful that they are doing well and we are thankful for the tremendous outpouring of support from the communities we serve."
"Why run from an accident. My first initial thought is she could have hurt someone," said Emma Cazeault.
With the accident happening at the height of rush hour Cazeault says it was fortunate no one else was injured.
