Woman Found Beaten, Partially Clothed In Chelsea
CHELSEA (CBS) – A 29-year-old woman was brutally attacked early Sunday morning in Chelsea.
According to Chelsea fire officials, the victim was discovered bleeding from her face on the sidewalk outside of 286 Chestnut Street sometime before 4:40 a.m.
She was partially clothed, and had been badly beaten.
Her injuries were so severe, police originally thought she had been stabbed as well.
The woman was rushed to Mass. General Hospital. According to the Suffolk District Attorney's office, she's in critical condition.
Chelsea Police Capt. Keith Houghton said a suspect is in custody.
He's identified the suspect as 26-year-old Manuel Marroquin. Marroquin, who lives on the street where the victim was found, is currently charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for allegedly beating the woman inside the Chestnut Street apartment.
Police say the attack was not random, but was also not domestic in nature.
Stephanie Sanchez, who said she is a cousin of the suspect, asked for privacy for her family while the attack is investigated. Sanchez said she does not know what happened but said her family extends its condolences to the woman's family.
Marroquin will be arraigned Monday morning in Chelsea District Court.
