Winthrop High Hockey Players, Coaches Focus Of Underage Drinking Investigation

WINTHROP (CBS) - Winthrop police are looking into possible underage drinking involving the high school hockey team and two coaches.

Police Chief Terence Delehanty told WBZ-TV Wednesday an officer on patrol late Friday night saw lights on in the locker room at the Larsen Skating Rink.

When he went inside, the officer found a majority of the hockey team and four adults with alcoholic beverages.  Two of the adults were coaches, including head coach Dale Dunbar, according to investigators.

Dunbar is also manager of the rink.  He has reportedly been placed on administrative leave.

He has not returned a request for comment from WBZ.

Delehanty said the officer did not see anyone drinking the alcohol.

However, the officer found "fresh" empty beer cans and solo cups in multiple trash bags. There was also an odor of beer, according to police.

There were no arrests and no one has been charged.

The team had just returned to the rink after losing to Lincoln-Sudbury in the state tournament in Woburn earlier in the evening.

Police are working with the Winthrop School Administration to get more information about the incident.

Investigators are also reviewing surveillance video from cameras near the entrance to the locker room to see who carried in the alcohol.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karen Twomey reports

School Superintendent John Macero told WBZ in a statement, "Winthrop Public Schools has a zero tolerance for alcohol and is currently investigating this allegation. While this is an ongoing investigation I am not at liberty to comment at this time."
