Fire breaks out at apartment building in Winthrop; Four taken to the hospital

WINTHROP — Four people have been taken to the hospital after a fire broke out at a four-floor apartment building in Winthrop on Veterans Road Friday afternoon.

According to fire officials, the blaze began on the third floor of the building and spread across the roof to the apartment building next door.

Residents said visible flames and smoke were seen billowing from the building's windows.

Firefighters from multiple communities, including Winthrop, Boston, and Chelsea, reported to the scene to help control the blaze and get residents to safety.

"We have seven guys on duty," said Winthrop Fire Captain Stephen Calandra. "A building this big? Mutual aid's key."

Multiple residents were recused from the building by ladder trucks, ground ladders, and firefighters walking people out.

Four were taken to the hospital but their conditions are unknown at this time.

No residents were forced to jump from the building to safety.

It is unclear how the fire started or how exactly many residents are displaced at this time.
