Windham, NH Selectman Charged With Assault

WINDHAM, New Hampshire (CBS) -- A member of the Windham Board of Selectmen was arrested Sunday morning after police said he assaulted another man at a bar.

Joel Desilets, 32, is charged with simple assault. He was released on $2,000 cash bail.

Windham Police said the assault happened around 1 a.m. Sunday morning at the Old School Bar and Grill on Range Road.

They said the victim was a 40-year-old Newton, New Hampshire man. They did not say if he was injured.

But in a statement, Desilets said he was the victim in the assault, not the Newton man.

"Last Saturday, I was the victim of an unprovoked, violent attack at a restaurant in Windham," the statement read. "I am confident that our local law enforcement and court system will resolve the issue expeditiously and fairly, and that my innocence will be proven."

Desilets said he won't make any further statements since the matter is still under investigation.

He's due back in court on June 30.
