Whitey Bulger, Catherine Grieg Wrote 'Love Letters' To Each Other Via Attorney

BOSTON (CBS) - Whitey Bulger and Catherine Grieg communicated to each other by writing tearful love letters to each other in jail.

And their high-profile lawyer helped.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Doug Cope reports

Bulger's lawyer J.W. Carney told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Bulger wrote a letter on a legal pad to former girlfriend Catherine Grieg, and Carney in turn delivered that letter personally to a Rhode Island jail where Grieg was being held for harboring a fugitive.

Carney then brought a letter to Bulger written on that same pad by Grieg.

Martin Healy, the chief legal counsel of the Massachusetts Bar Association, says while Carney's action may seem a little unusual for a lawyer, it's not unethical.

"It does appear that although he did share the fact that letters were exchanged, we still don't know what the contents of those letters were," Healy told WBZ.

Carney said both Bulger and Grieg sobbed as they read each other's letters and that he did not read either one.

It was revealed Friday that Bulger has been moved to a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona.

Bulger had also spent time in jails in Plymouth, Brooklyn and Oklahoma City since his trial ended last year.
