'Suspicious Death' Investigation Aggressively Underway In Waltham

WALTHAM (CBS) – Police are aggressively pursuing the investigation into the "suspicious death" of a woman inside a Waltham apartment. Police returned to the home a second time Saturday evening.

Early Saturday morning, Waltham Police responded to calls from the Adams Street address because of a report of a woman who was assaulted around 2:30 a.m.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said officers found the body of a woman in her 30s.

After reports of the death, police quickly arrived on the scene. Resident Zyg Lycus said the police were even trying to kick-in the door.

"They tried to kick the door in and when I realized it was the police, I just opened the door," Lycus said. "Before long there were more cruisers and state troopers."

Police arrested Derrick Lopez, 18, of Waltham quickly after the incident. He's still in custody after being charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and armed assault with intent to murder.

Police say this wasn't a random act and that there's no danger to the public.

Some of the residents of the area aren't surprised at what happened. Susana Dorley said it was bound to happen.

"It's not a surprise. Everyone here, there's that house; there's one around the corner. It's a daily or weekly rental and the transient community. People are through there so much," Dorley said.

Police are not releasing any more information at this time.
