1 Killed, 1 Injured In Waltham Pedestrian Crash

WALTHAM (CBS) -- One man was killed and another injured when they were struck while crossing a busy street in Waltham Tuesday morning.

The men were struck by an SUV while in the crosswalk on Wyman Street around 6:51 a.m.

Waltham Police said they had both just gotten off the bus when they were hit by an SUV driven by a 60-year-old Waltham man.

They said one 65-year-old Watertown man was pronounced dead at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

The other pedestrian, a 70-year-old Boston man, was taken to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries to his face and legs.

The driver was not injured. He and the victims have not yet been identified.

A hat and sneakers were strewn about on the road Tuesday, and the SUV that was involved sat nearby with damage to its front end.

Both men are cafeteria workers for Hobbs Brook Management, which runs a nearby office park.

The man who died worked there for the past three decades.

James Hache knew both men, and said he knows the area well.

"Trying to cross this street in the afternoon, nobody lets you cross," he said.

Police were still trying to figure out if speed and lighting factored into the cause of the crash.

"We definitely know that they were in the crosswalk," said Waltham Police Sgt. William Gallant. "But we've still got to do an investigation to determine the lighting at the time, because at the time of the accident, it was still dark."

Waltham Police said to expect delays and avoid the area.

Wyman Street was reopened around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The crash is still being investigated, but it was determined that alcohol was not a factor.

Sgt. Gallant said the tragedy also served as a grim reminder.

"Just because you have the right of way, doesn't mean a vehicle's going to stop," he said. "Vehicles, unfortunately, will do a lot more damage to you than you'll do to them."
