Police: Sex Offender Used $10 Million Lottery Prize To Commit New Crimes

UXBRIDGE (CBS/AP) — A 62-year-old man on the state's sex offender registry who won a $10 million lottery prize in 2008 is facing new charges police allege he committed with the help of his winnings.

Daniel Snay was arrested Friday and charged with sexually assaulting a boy over several years starting when the boy was 10. The child is now 16.

Police Chief Jeffrey Lourie says Snay's "windfall aided the commission of the crimes" by helping him gain favor with people.

The boy allegedly told police Snay assaulted him many times in a camper behind the suspect's home and bought him ATVs to keep him quiet.

At Snay's arraignment Monday, prosecutors argued Snay was returning to his old ways, having previously served two prison terms for sexual assaults. Snay's attorney, however, said the allegations are part of a scheme on the part of the victim to get Snay's lottery winnings.

A judge ordered Snay held on $5 million cash bail.

A Massachusetts State Lottery spokesperson told WBZ-TV Snay claimed his $10 million prize in the $20 Billion Dollar Blockbuster instant ticket on January 30, 2008. The prize is paid in annual installments of $500,000 ($350,000 after tax withholdings) over 20 years. Snay is scheduled to receive prize payments until 2027.

Snay is listed as a Level 3 sex offender by the state, considered the most likely to re-offend.

He was held without bail over the weekend.
