An Inside Look: Thanksgiving Preps On The U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower
BOSTON (CBS) – WBZ NewsRadio 1030 morning anchor Joe Mathieu just returned from spending 24 hours aboard the U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The crew of the ship, which has seen plenty of action over the last four decades, is getting ready for deployment - and Thanksgiving.
The Eisenhower, which is currently stationed about 100 miles off the coast of Virginia, will be celebrating Thanksgiving at sea.
That means the crew on board will be preparing a massive Turkey Day meal.
Crew members will be cooking up a total of nearly 3,000 pounds of turkey to feed close to 5,000 people.
Side dishes will include cranberry sauce, macaroni and cheese, and just about anything you can imagine to make the people on board feel like they're at home, even when they're spending the holiday readying for deployment.
Mathieu spoke to several members of the Eisenhower's crew about all the work and the unique circumstances that come with making Thanksgiving possible at sea.
