USA Beats Japan, Wins Women's World Cup

BOSTON (CBS) -- After reeling off four early goals, the USA maintained their lead and beat defending champion Japan 5-2 to win the Women's World Cup on Sunday.

Carli Lloyd led the USA offensive attack, tallying a hat trick in the first half. Lauren Holiday and Tobin Heath each contributed a goal in the contest.

It was the highest-scoring championship game in tournament history.

USA won the World Cup for the first time since winning it in 1999.

Mayor Marty Walsh tweeted congratulations on the team's victory.

"Congrats to the 2015 Women's World Cup Champion ‪#‎USWNT! Remember, all things are possible when you believe. ‪#‎SheBelieves," he said.

Thousands of fans gathered at City Hall Plaza to celebrate the team's victory.
