Two Officers Injured After Arrest On Boston Common Turned Into Fight

BOSTON (CBS) -- An arrest on the Boston Common turned into a brawl that injured two police officers on Friday while bystanders recorded the scene.

At about 5:40 p.m. on Friday, two officers attempted to place Joseph Demaio II, 31, of New Haven, Connecticut, under arrest for an outstanding warrant for a parole violation. The attempt turned into what police describe as a violent fight that injured both officers. Police say a crowd gathered as they arrested Demaio, yelling at the officers and filming the fight.

Police successfully arrested Demaio after additional officers arrived. The two injured officers were taken to the hospital for head and knee injuries, and were later released.

Demaio sustained minor cuts during the fight, police say. He will appear in Boston Municipal Court charged with two counts of assault and battery on a police officer and disturbing the peace.
