Two Firefighters Injured, 34 Residents Displaced After East Boston Fire
BOSTON (CBS) – Two firefighters were injured and 34 residents were displaced following an overnight five-alarm fire in East Boston.
Boston firefighters responded to an apartment building at 1051 Saratoga Street just before 1 a.m. on Saturday morning, and flames were showing upon their arrival.
As crews worked to knock down the fire, flames spread to the neighboring 1053 Saratoga Street building, which is just feet from the building where the flames began, firefighters said.
The fire reached five alarms during the overnight hours, causing an estimated $1 million of damage, about $500,000 in each triple decker.
According to fire officials, 34 people were displaced by the fires, though no residents were injured.
Two firefighters were treated at the scene and transported to nearby hospitals by ambulance. One firefighter suffered a knee injury while another was treated for heat exhaustion.
Investigators were on scene Saturday morning for an initial look at what may have caused the fire and where it started. Fire officials were scheduled to return later in the day to continue the investigation.
