TSA Collects Over $13K In Loose Change At Logan In FY 2014

BOSTON (CBS) -- Travelers at Logan Airport have been finding their pockets a little lighter after going through security.

The TSA has released the amount of loose change collected from security checkpoints at American airports – an eye-popping $674,841.06 in Fiscal Year 2014. That's up from $383,413.79 in 2008.

Boston's Logan Airport ranks in the top 20 for change collected from airports from Oct. 1, 2013 to Sept. 30, 2014 at $13,513.50.

"TSA makes every effort to reunite passengers with items left at the checkpoint, however there are instances where loose change or other items are left behind and unclaimed," an agency spokesman said. "Unclaimed money, typically consisting of loose coins passengers remove from their pockets, is documented and turned into the TSA financial office."

Congress allowed the TSA to use unclaimed money for security operations starting in 2005.

In New Hampshire last year, $1,206.89 was recorded at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.  Passengers at T.F. Green Airport in Providence  left behind $3,051.33.

JFK International Airport in New York leads the way for change collected, with $42,550 unclaimed last year.
