Driver hurt after truck hits bridge over Route 1 in Saugus

SAUGUS - Rush hour traffic on Route 1 in Saugus was slower than usual Friday morning after a truck hit a bridge and the driver fell out onto the road.

It happened in the southbound lanes at the Walnut Street exit shortly after 7 a.m.

Massachusetts State Police said the truck was carrying a dumpster on Route 1 when it "struck the underside of the overpass bridge."

The driver, a 38-year-old man from Lowell, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with what police said were "serious, but non-life-threatening injuries."

"He got himself out of the truck and fell to the ground in the middle lane," a State Police spokeperson told WBZ-TV in an email.

No one else was hurt.

The scene was cleared about an hour later but there were still delays because two lanes stayed closed for a bridge inspection. It was cleared by an inspector and all lanes reopened just after 10 a.m.

Police said the 2012 Mack truck is owned by JRM Hauling.
