Train Derailment Causes 1,800 Gallon Fuel Spill

TAUNTON (CBS) -- A train derailment in Taunton caused about 1,800 gallons of fuel to leak into the ground Wednesday morning.

Officials said Wednesday afternoon that the train could be stuck there for another day or so.

"It appears the damage to the train was more substantial than initially thought," Taunton Fire Chief Bradshaw said.

The cargo train only had crew members on board and no injuries were reported, according to officials.

Pictures show the front of the engine of the CSX train came off the tracks.

The Taunton Fire Department responded to the scene just before 8 a.m. and was working to contain the spill and remove contaminated along with the Taunton Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Environmental Protection hazardous materials unit.

Officials said the derailment happened in the woods so there is no threat to the public at this time.

"I can tell you it happened right at the switching tracks, I don't know exactly what caused the train to derail. I can tell you that one of the rails did kind of rupture the tank when the engine slipped off it, that's what caused the actual rupture of the tank and the fuel spill," said Fire Chief Tim Bradshaw.

Commerical use of the track has temporarily been shut down but the MBTA will not be impacted.
