Toucher & Rich: WFAN's Joe Benigno Gives His Top 5 Yankees Of All Time
BOSTON (CBS) - Derek Jeter announced on Wednesday he'll be retiring from the sport of baseball at the conclusion of the 2014 season, and Joe Benigno of WFAN in New York was a bit surprised he would make that announcement a month and a half before spring training.
However, because he's meant so much to the team he feels like Jeter has the right to retire however he wants. As long as he stays retired, unlike Brett Favre, he has no problem with the "farewell tour" so to speak.
Benigno joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich program on Friday morning to discuss Derek Jeter's place in Yankees history.
Some New York media members have gone so far as to say, "There will never be a Yankee that mattered more than Derek Jeter."
While that seems to be the in vogue opinion in recent days, it's also incorrect - so Joe B set the record straight with T&R.
"Where would you put Jeter in the pantheon of Yankee greats?" Fred asked Benigno on Friday.
"I put him at #5. I put him behind the Babe, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle. I think it's close between him and Yogi Berra, but I'll give him the edge over Yogi because he's been the face of the franchise over the past 20 years. He won't just get his number retired and a plaque in monument park, he'll get an actual monument. He's the 5th greatest Yankee of all time," said Benigno.
Despite all his accomplishments on the field, Joe B said his biggest strength was the ability to fly under the radar of the New York media. He's dated (seemingly hundreds) of models and actresses, and not so much as a parking ticket to blemish his resume.
