Toucher & Rich Call Out Boomer Esiason For Scorching Hot Peyton Manning/Patriots Take

BOSTON (CBS) -- Boomer Esiason joins Toucher & Rich every week to throw around his hot takes on the New England Patriots and the NFL.

On Monday, one of those earned him a warning from the famous "Hot Take Police."

With Jimmy Garoppolo sidelined for an unknown period of time with a shoulder injury he suffered in Sunday's 31-24 win over the Miami Dolphins, Boomer gave out an interesting suggestion on CBS's The NFL Today: The Patriots should sign retired quarterback Peyton Manning.

So Boomer was issued a stern warning for "hot take abuse" when he hit the 98.5 The Sports Hub airwaves on Monday.

"Why not? Wouldn't it be unbelievable," Esiason said of the suggestion. "Not just to come in and back up Jacoby Brissett, but I would say keep him on the roster depending on how bad Jimmy Garoppolo's shoulder is. I doubt it will happen, but it's a very intriguing thought; to have a guy on the sideline just in case something did happen, and you needed a guy to go out there and just have the presence of playing quarterback. Why not?

"It is just cannon fodder -- you throw it out there and see how people react," Boomer admitted. "It would kind of be like Derek Jeter coming out of retirement and playing shortstop for the Boston Red Sox."

As for real football talk, Esiason touched on the extremely tough task ahead for the Patriots. They now have to get rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett ready for the Houston Texans, one of the top defenses in the NFL through two weeks, on a short week.

"I would think [offensive coordinator Josh] McDaniels and Bill Belichick look at this as an unbelievable challenge, and will figure out a way to get Brissett in the right position to make the right easy throws," he said. "They'll tell him the only way they lose this game is is he throws interceptions or makes mistakes on their side of the 50. If they can keep him from doing that, which is easier said than done, they'll beat the Houston Texans on Thursday night."

The Patriots are actually home underdogs for the Thursday night tilt, but Boomer still thinks New England will improve to 3-0.

"It's going to come down to special teams and defense; those two units will have to play their asses off," he said.
