Daily Talker: Should Casino Law Be Repealed?
Casino companies who are competing for Massachusetts' three gaming licenses say they'll go to the Supreme Judicial Court to try to stop a repeal of the casino law from making it onto the ballot.
Our media partners at the Boston Globe report the filing could come as early as Monday.
Casino opponents gathered enough signatures to put the repeal measure on the statewide ballot, saying the voters never had a chance to say whether they wanted gambling legalized. Lawmakers passed the law in 2011.
Casino operators say if the repeal passed, it would be an illegal taking of their contract rights, since winning operators will soon have to pay tens of millions of dollars in nonrefundable licensing fees. They also say people in Everett, Revere, and Springfield all approved casinos in their individual towns.
