4 Billerica High School Students Arrested After Gel Blaster Incident Injures Tewksbury Teens

BILLERICA (CBS) - Four Billerica Memorial High School students have been arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after allegedly firing what police say were "gel blasters" in the parking lot at Tewksbury Memorial High School after a boys basketball game Thursday night.

Kelly Wentworth says her daughter and friend were walking to their car when they heard pops. "Her friend was hit pretty hard, they didn't know what happened," said Wentworth.

Police say the shots were from two pellet gun-type devices. Seven students were hurt, none seriously but received medical attention on scene. "My daughter's friend was hurt, she has a welts," Wentworth said. "My daughter felt something hit her but she wasn't hurt."

Billerica Superintendent Timothy Piwowar released a statement, "We are deeply concerned about what occurred at the Billerica-Tewksbury basketball game last evening, and condemn the actions that resulted in injuries to members of the Tewksbury community. We also wish all those involved a speedy recovery."

Kelly Wentworth believes the students should be held accountable. "Definitely convicted and held accountable because these kids could have lost an eye or something worse," Wentworth said.

Tewksbury students were able to grab the license plate number of one of two cars involved leading police to the suspects. Now school officials say the relationship between the schools will have to repaired.

"It was a big night the boys won, an exciting game and it's a shame how it ended," Wentworth said.

The Billerica Superintendent says the students are no longer in the building and could be disciplined pending the outcome of the investigation. Billerica students will not be allowed to attend Saturday's hockey game against Tewksbury.
