FBI Seeks Skype Records Of Terror Suspect, Son Of Boston Police Captain
BOSTON (CBS) -- The FBI is seeking access to the Skype account of the son of a Boston Police captain who was arrested last July on terror charges.
Alexander Ciccolo, of Adams, also known as Ali Al Amriki, was arrested July 4 and charged with being in possession of firearms. According to prosecutors, Ciccolo bought the guns from a person cooperating with the FBI.
Prosecutors say Ciccolo planned to execute an ISIS-inspired attack that included detonating a bomb at a university.
According to a search and seizure warrant from U.S. District Court, the FBI is seeking all information related to the Skype account alialamriki 1 that pertain to Ciccolo's alleged plot, including anything that might show Ciccolo's state of mind or support for terrorism.
The Boston Globe reports that the FBI's cooperating witness, who they said gave Ciccolo the guns that led to his arrest as part of the investigation, said Ciccolo spoke of a third person who expressed interest in Ciccolo's plot. The witness provided copies of an online conversation referencing a third person to the FBI.
Prosecutors said that before his arrest, Ciccolo bought a pressure cooker similar to ones used in the Boston Marathon bombings of April 2013.
Ciccolo's father, Boston Police Capt. Robert Ciccolo, reported his son to the FBI. Capt. Ciccolo was supervising more than two dozen officers in Kenmore Square during the Marathon bombings.
His son had previously undergone mental health treatment. The father and son are estranged.
