Teen Found Unconscious In Everett May Have Been Assaulted
BOSTON (CBS) - Hearts are heavy at Everett High School as students pray for their friend and classmate.
"I'm very outraged at what happened and I think it's ridiculous," one student said.
Police say an 18-year-old senior whose name has not been released is fighting for her life at Mass General Hospital after being found unconscious on a driveway on Appleton Street Saturday.
Investigators say she may have been assaulted. "It was devastating and everybody wants to know what's going on," Principal Erick Naumann said.
Police say the teen was attending a party on Waters Street over the weekend and may have been drinking with a group of people. Sometime after the party she was attacked.
"Someone should've walked her home make sure she's OK," student Johnathon Chaves said.
She was found early Saturday morning a few streets away. She was rushed to the hospital with severe hypothermia.
"We were very upset to hear about a senior being injured over the weekend. Our prayers are with her and her family and this is a non-school related incident," Superintendent Frederick Foresteire said.
Grief counselors were on hand Monday to speak with students.
"She is just a fun loving girl and it's terrifying thing what happened to her," student Brendan Jefferson said.
"The Everett Police Department is still actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident," Everett Police Chief Steven Mazzie said in a statement.
"Based on evidence gathered so far, the incident appears to be a non-random act. While the search for a suspect or suspects is continuing, members of the public should not feel that their safety may be threatened."
